Running for a Big Gain (Nov 1973)

Southwestern College vs Bethany College

A Swede running back sprints along the sideline for a big gain as the Southwestern defenders close in.

I was standing at the edge of the field with a short 58mm lens, so I was really close to the action... and many of those players were running directly at me at a high rate of speed! I jumped away right after taking this shot, just before several players came sliding headfirst across the point where I had been standing.

I was 18 years old when I took this shot: young enough (and stupid enough) to believe that I could avoid any trouble that came my way. This may be the closest I've come to being injured at a football game.
