Photographs by Jan Beran
The Lowell Press, 1985, 24 pages
The Lowell Press is not a traditional book publisher, but rather a printing firm located in Kansas City, MO. This 24-page booklet was a promotional piece that was produced to showcase their printing skills to potential clients.
The black & white photographs are beautifully reproduced using four inks (black, two shades of gray, and tan) and a spot varnish. Text is minimal and is primarily production notes, although each photo does have a short caption.
Jan Beran's photos are landscapes and nature shots taken in Czechoslovakia. The wide landscape views are simply gorgeous, and are reminiscent of William Clift's work. The closer views are not quite as breathtaking, but are still well done.
It would be easy to dismiss this as just advertising, but I think that anyone interested in landscape and nature photography would enjoy this booklet. Recommended.
