Eikoh Hosoe is a Japanese photographer who has worked in a wide variety of visually inventive styles. He often draws inspiration from other performing or visual artists; many of his images are extensively manipulated.
His work is divided into discrete chronological periods. In each of these periods, he works primarily in one specific style and/or on one particular subject. This beautifully printed book presents a sample of images from seven of these periods. The photographs are printed in black & white without any captions except for his portraits, which have captions giving the subject's name.
The Afterword by Ronald J. Hill gives a brief biography of Hosoe, along with a more detailed look at the photographer's different periods of work.
Hosoe's images are unconventional and often quite striking. Recommended.
