Breaking Bounds
Lois Greenfield
Text by William A. Ewing
Chronicle Books, 1992, 118 pages
ISBN 0-8118-0232-9

This book contains 87 dynamic images of experimental dance. These photographs are the result of an unusual partnership between the photographer and her subjects, all professional dancers. Greenfield encouraged the dancers to invent new moves divorced from any conventional choreography, which she then captured with a 6x6 Hasselblad camera.

The book's square format echoes that of the images, which are presented uncropped. The photographs are all in black & white, beautifully printed using a duotone process.

The photographs are divided into five sections: Solo, Duo, Restraint/Release, Fission/Fusion, and Breaking Bounds. William Ewing provides both a detailed Introduction and an in-depth interview with Greenfield.

This collaboration between a photographer and her subjects created some of the most unique dance photographs ever taken. Highly recommended.
