2018 was my first full year as a digital photographer. I purchased my digital camera in September 2017, almost 25 years after I had abandoned traditional film-based photography, back in early 1993.

The year was full of mixed emotions for me. Returning to photography after such a prolonged absence was like reuniting with a long-lost family. But while much was familiar, and even though my old skills were quickly recovered, digital photography was different enough from how I had worked previously that I often felt like a beginner, discovering the joys of photography all over again.

I shot well over 15,000 photos in 2018, and saved 2,066 of them (about 172 photos saved per month).

I thought it would be fun to showcase some of my favorite photos from this first year. It should be interesting to compare them to the work I did back in the film era, as well as to the work I'll do in the future as an experienced digital photographer.

My original idea was to simply select all of my favorite photos from the year… but I ended up with nearly 200 images, which was way too many! To get a more manageable number, I instead chose just two photos from each month, for a total of 24 images. These pictures are presented here in chronological order. These are not necessarily my 24 best images, as with a limit of just two photos per month many fine images had to be left out. But these 24 images do nicely represent the year I had.
