Picture of the Week

A once-a-week look back at some of my favorite photos.

Close-Up Fireworks (Jul 2019)

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and with my favorite wide-angle prime lens out of commission, I wasn't going to be able to do the traditional wide views of the July 4th fireworks.

So, I decided to use a normal lens and get in close, with each photo capturing only a portion of the full display. The results were, I think, spectacular: there's a lot of detail that normally isn't prominent in a wider view, and the random placement of the elements in each image gave the images a dynamic variety that's lacking in the traditional views.

I did many images in color, of course, but when the colors weren't great, like in this shot, I converted the image to black & white for a stark graphical effect.
