At the Starting Line (Aug 1980)

Motorcycle racers prepare for the start of a Scrambles Race at the Lake Kanopolis Race Track. The official in front, with his arms raised, walks across the starting line to check that each rider is ready to go; if any rider signals that he has a problem the start would be waved off to allow that bike to be safely moved off of the starting grid. If there are no problems, then the official at the left, in the striped shirt, will fire a (very loud) starter's pistol to start the race.
